Alaska Zoo
Set on 25 wooded acres in the hillside of Anchorage, Alaska Zoo exhibits wildlife of the Arctic and sub-Arctic in a natural setting. The zoo is home to more than 100 birds and mammals representing 50 species and features a wide variety of animals native to Alaska, such as polar bears, as well as exotic creatures such as African and Asian elephants, Siberian Tigers, and Tibetan yaks. Earthquake Park
See where a neighborhood in south-central Alaska slid into Cook Inlet from a powerful earthquake, destroying 75 homes and business, in 1964. Earthquake Park now features interpretive displays and photographs explaining the 9.4 quake, and Alaska’s geology, flora and fauna. The park features the Alaska Experience Theatre, with the Alaska Earthquake Exhibit, and a film that describes the earthquake with seismic sensations. Located on the Coastal Trail, Earthquake Park boasts views of Anchorage, Cook Inlet and Mt. McKinley. [Top]

Salmon Viewing at Elmendorf State Hatchery
Located in Anchorage, Elmendorf State Hatchery is a great place to view Chinook salmon and rainbow trout as they struggle upstream on the north bank of Ship Creek. Adjacent to the hatchery, the salmon viewing area lets you see Chinook salmon from late May through July, and coho salmon August through mid-September returning to the state-run hatchery from their years in the ocean. Alaska Botanical Garden
Located in Anchorage, explore 110 acres of spruce and birch woodland filled with arctic horticulture and native plants. Discover a landscape of magnificent gardens - two herb perennial gardens, a formal garden, an alpine rock garden, and the East Garden - interconnected by the Wildflower Trail. With 1,100 species of perennials and 150 native plant species, Alaska Botanical Garden is a wonderful place to experience the summer sub-arctic growing season and learn about plants native to Alaska.
